Engage children in hands-on activities using manipulatives like plastic letter tiles. Have students find the letters that spell their name. Children can also make letters out of play dough or write them on a paper plate covered with whipped topping.
Display the alphabet in your classroom. Post an alphabet strip that shows the upper and lower case letters. Let the children create an alphabet wall. Pass out old magazines and have them find and cut out specific letters and glue them to construction paper then display them under the targeted letter. When you introduce a letter, have children draw pictures of things that begin with that letter's sound.
Play games that help children remember the alphabet. Buy an alphabet bingo game or make your own using downloaded ningo cards printed on card stock. If you have access to computers, utilize alphabet games on the Internet. The Funschool website has simple games in which children connect letters in the proper sequence or click on pictures that begin with a specific letter.
Reinforce the alphabet when reading aloud to class. When you show children the book's cover, ask them to tell you the names of the letters in the title. After reading poetry, write poems on chart paper. Then ask each child to come up and circle or point to a specific letter.
