How to Help Children Learn the Alphabet

Whether you are a parent or a preschool teacher, helping your children learn the alphabet does not require a fancy lesson plan or expensive supplies. Helping children have a firm understanding of the alphabet begins with regular exposure to letters through songs, books and games. Consistently facilitating alphabet activities that keep your students engaged will provide them with the foundation they will need when they start to learn how to read.

Instructions

    • 1

Sing the alphabet song with your students. Point to the letters on an alphabet chart as you sing.

    • 2

Give your students alphabet puzzles with which to play.

    • 3

Read pictures books that focus on the alphabet. A few examples are "Dr. Seuss' ABC Book," "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and "Richard Scarry's Find Your ABCs."

    • 4

Play "I Spy" with items around the classroom. For example say, "I spy something that begins with the letter S." Your students then look around the room to call out items that begin with the letter S until they choose the correct one.

    • 5

Play "Alphabet Bingo." Give each student a sheet of paper with pictures of various items. Call out letters and have your students mark off the items that begin with that letter.

    • 6

Help your students make an alphabet scrapbook. Fold a stack of papers in half and staple them along the seam. Students label each page with a letter and then draw pictures of things that begin with that letter. Work on this activity a little at a time throughout the year.
