How to Learn the Swedish Alphabet

Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken by millions in Northern Europe and in many smaller Swedish-speaking communities around the world. Swedish is the official language of Sweden. The Swedish alphabet is almost identical to the English alphabet with three additional vowels, two of which resemble an "a" and the other an "o." While the pronunciation of the Swedish alphabet is similar to the pronunciation of the English alphabet, the differences are significant enough that lessons with audio components are imperative in order to learn the Swedish alphabet correctly.

Instructions

    • 1
There are many free online pronunciation guides.

Find an online Swedish alphabet pronunciation guide like the one offered by Tripod. The guide should both show each letter of the Swedish alphabet and play an audio clip of the correct pronunciation.

    • 2

Practice saying each letter aloud. Listen to the sound clip of each letter and repeat it as many times as is necessary to approximate the Swedish pronunciation. Some letters will be more difficult to pronounce than others. Practice the more difficult letters more often.

    • 3

Memorize the letters. Make flash cards on index paper with each letter written on a separate card. Say the sound of the letter corresponding to the card. Repeat this process until you have memorized every letter of the Swedish alphabet.
