The Cyrillic alphabet derived from the classical Greek alphabet. It is used for the Slavic languages including Russian, Bulgarian and Macedonian. The Cyrillic alphabet began in the 9th century and now consists of 33 letters. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet is not as intimidating as it looks. There are certain letters that look and sound similar to English. The remainder can be learned with practice. The Slavic languages are phonetic. Once you learn the pronunciation, you will be able to sound out words.
