How to Learn the Alphabet & Numbers

When learning a foreign language, seemingly simple aspects such as letters and numbers can be tricky. The names of the letters in the alphabet will be different in other languages, even if you use the same alphabet. Languages that use the Latin alphabet, such as Spanish, French, Swedish and Hungarian have different names for letters than those in English, which can make spelling and dictation difficult. Numbers can pose challenges as well, as you can't "sound out" the pronunciation as you can with written words. Practice letters and numbers as part of your language classes or self study.

Use flash cards to learn the names of the alphabet and numbers. Make sure to practice the entire alphabet, and upper- and lower-case letters. To associate the sounds used in English with numbers and get used to English phonetics, spell out the numbers in English on the other side of the card for number flash cards. Practice numbers and letters in context. Find a native speaker to help you with dictations, or to use numbers and letters in natural conversation. Have your tutor or language exchange partner construct lessons that will integrate the use of numbers and letters as they are relevant to your life. Start with numbers that will be useful to you, such as phone numbers, ages of friends and family members, months and years of birthdays and prices of goods at the grocery store. Adapt the same idea for spelling to practice the alphabet. Practice spelling the names of your family members, friends and co-workers. A game such as hangman will give you the opportunity to practice the entire alphabet.

Practice your pronunciation. You will need to properly enunciate in order to spell information such as names, addresses, credit card numbers, phone numbers or emails. As you may need to do this over the phone or in other situations where you must dictate letters and numbers, correct pronunciation is as important as listening and comprehending. With numbers, pay attention to syllable stress in words such as "thirteen" and "thirty," or "eighteen" and "eighty." Practice your pronunciation of the alphabet so you are confident in reciting the letters as they are used in English. This can be especially tricky with languages that use the Latin alphabet. For example, in Spanish the letter "i" is pronounced like "e" in English. Be aware of these differences when spelling out words to other English speakers to avoid being misunderstood.
