How to Learn the Egyptian Alphabet

The Egyptian language is a spoken language, also known as Egyptian Arabic. According to Omniglot, "Arabic was brought to Egypt by the Muslim conquest of 7th century AD. It was influenced by the Coptic language, a descendant of Ancient Egyptian which was spoken alongside Arabic until about the 17th century in parts of Egypt, and also by Turkish." In order to learn Egyptian Arabic, you must first study the Egyptian alphabet. It's composed of a written symbol, followed by a specific sound. It's not very hard to learn, but both time and patience are required from the student.

Take a first glimpse of the Egyptian alphabet to get a quick feel for the symbols and their correlating sounds. Notice how the letters are written slightly differently, depending on where they fall within a written word. My Languages has the Egyptian alphabet listed on its website, along with a sound guide, as does Omniglot.

Practice writing the various symbols. Next to each symbol, write the different variations, depending on where it falls at within a word. Start with only a few symbols and work your way through the entire alphabet.

    • 3

Say each sound aloud. To memorize the sounds, practice saying the sounds while looking at each symbol. Use the sound guide next to each symbol. The sound guide shows you how to say the sound based on the Latin language system.

    • 4

Create flashcards for each symbol. Write each symbol on one side of an index card. Write the sound it makes on the other side of the card. Practice saying the sound aloud as you come to each new card. If you get stuck, turn the card over and check to see what sound it makes.

Try writing out words once you have mastered the alphabet. This is the true test to whether you need more practice. If you find you need more practice, consider finding a friend to help you study, or a tutor who already knows the language well.
