Choose three letters to introduce to the children.
Trace and cut manila oak tag into 6-inch by 6-inch cards. Cut 24 cards. Take the 4-inch letter stencils and trace each letter on the center of an oak tag card. Fill in the letters with black marker. Make eight cards of each letter.
Make several index cards with the same three letters to use as flash cards.
Place the manila cards face up on the floor, in a random pattern. Use tape to hold the letters securely on the floor. Place the cards close enough so the children can hop from one card to another card.
Choose four students to stand around the cards. Hold up an index card, with one of the three letters being introduced, to show the students. Tell the children the letter name and have them repeat it. Each child then finds the matching letter card on the floor and hops on the card, repeating the name of the letter.
Praise the child if she is correct. If a child is on an incorrect letter, have him look at the card you are holding and repeat the name of the letter again. He can then try again to hop on the correct letter. Once all the children are on the correct letter, show another card. Tell the children the letter name and have them repeat it. The children then hop on the new letter.
Repeat this activity several times with flash cards, then try saying just the name of the letter to hop on and do not show the card. When the children easily recognize the letters in the activity, change to new letters.
