Activities with the Alphabet

Teaching children about the alphabet requires more than singing the alphabet song over and over. Children need practice writing or tracing letters and recognizing words that start with those letters. Through flash cards, crafts, tracing activities and online games, children can become experts on the letters of the alphabet.
  1. Alphabet Crafts

    • For each letter of the alphabet, have children make a hands-on craft related to that letter. Cut a letter out of construction paper and add details to make it look like an animal or other object that begins with that letter. For example, the letter "I" cut from green construction paper can be turned into an iguana by adding a round head, tongue, tail and coloring to look like scales. By adding a triangle-shaped roof to the top of the letter "H" and drawing on doors and windows, you can create a cute house.

    Flash Cards and Posters

    • Help children create flash cards and posters representing letters of the alphabet. Each flash card should contain the capital and lowercase version of the letter and a picture of an object that starts with that letter. Flash cards can be created using large index cards. For posters, have children help cut out pictures from magazines of objects that begin with a given letter and glue them onto a poster representing that letter. Next to each picture, write the name of the object, underlining the first letter to help children connect the objects to a specific letter of the alphabet.

    Letter Tracing

    • Provide children with letter stencils and have them trace the stencils to practice creating letter shapes. Children can also complete tracing sheets that contain an outline of the letter for children to trace and usually also have a picture to color. Many websites offer tracing sheets that can be downloaded for free. Cut out and laminate large versions of letters, and then punch holes along the shape of the letter. Allow children to string yarn through the holes to make the shape of the letter.

    Online Games

    • Numerous online letter games are available to help children practice the alphabet. PBS Kids offers matching, coloring and other alphabet games connected to some of children's favorite PBS shows such as Sesame Street, The Electric Company and WordWorld. Boowa & Kwala features an online letter recognition game where children are asked to show a specific letter to the character, Boowa, and click on the flash card that represents that letter.
