Pre-K Activities on the Letter M

Gaining an understanding of the 26 letters of the alphabet is an important part of the pre-kindergarten curriculum. Activities that surround the alphabet during pre-kindergarten include letter identification, letter-sound recognition and practice writing the letters. While concentrating on the letter M, there are several different activities in which you can engage children to promote these skills.
  1. Letter M Collage

    • Have children create a collage that features the letter M. Provide children with old magazines, scissors, construction paper and glue. Write an uppercase and lowercase M in the center of the construction paper. Instruct children to look through the magazines and cut out an assortment of uppercase and lowercase Ms. Once they've gathered a collection, have them glue the letters around the letters printed in the center of the paper.

    Decorate the Letter M

    • Reinforce the sound the letter M makes with this activity. Write an uppercase and lowercase M in block print in the center of a piece of paper. Provide children with monkey stickers, macaroni and M&M's. Discuss the sound the letter M makes and review each of the objects. Have children place the monkey stickers around the letters and glue the M&M's and macaroni by them as well.

    Trace the Letter M

    • Provide children with practice writing the letter M with this activity. Write out uppercase and lowercase letter Ms in dashes on a piece of paper. Provide children with markers (which begins with the letter M) and instruct them to trace over the upper- and lowercase letters.

    Make Muffins

    • Have students help you make muffins. Use a simple recipe and have children help to mix the ingredients and bake the muffins. While mixing, sing the "Muffin Man" song. After the muffins are done baking, enjoy them for a tasty letter M snack.

    Letter M Book

    • Make a book that showcases pictures of different items that begin with M. Print out images of monkeys, mushrooms, milk, mice, the moon and a moose. Have children color the images, cut them out and glue them to piece of construction paper. Make a cover for the book by printing an uppercase and lowercase letter M on construction paper and writing "The Letter M is For..." on it. Stack the pictures in a pile and staple the left-hand side to create a book. Go through it and review the different letter M pictures.
