Create a set of alphabet crafts that you can tailor to each letter of the week study unit. Draw a 7-inch-high bubble version of the letter and make photocopies on white card stock or heavyweight paper. Give each student a paper with the letter outline and objects that begin with the letter to glue inside of it. For the letter M, have the kids glue mini marshmallows or pieces of macaroni inside the letter's outline. Instruct the kids to take the paper home to display on the refrigerator for the rest of the week.
Help the kids discover the science of magnets and learn about the letter M at the same time. Use 3- to 6-inch U-shaped magnets, as opposed to smaller versions that the young children might swallow. Show the kids how the magnets attract metal objects and repel each other. Place plastic letter M magnetic letters in a bowl and let the kids fish for them with the larger magnets.
Design a simple letter game by buying 10 to 20 pairs of mittens with different designs at dollar or thrift shops. Divide the class into teams of three or four students. Call the first team to the front of the class and pour all of the mittens onto your desk. Time the team to see how long it takes them to properly match up all of the pairs. Give prizes like new pairs of mittens to the team that completes the task in the fastest time. If you have enough pairs for each student in the class, play a second game by giving each child a mismatched pair of mittens and asking them to search for the other student wearing mittens with the same, mismatched designs.
Organize letter M activities that will help the kids recognize the written letter. Gather an assortment of old maps and let the kids spread them on the floor or their desks. Instruct the children to circle any words, streets, cities or sites that begin with the letter M. Consider awarding prizes like muffins, Matchbox cars, monkey stuffed animals, magic tricks and gift certificates for milkshakes at a local ice cream shop to the five students who find the most letters in 10 minutes.
