Activities on the Letter V for Kindergarten

Plan activities for your kindergarten class to teach recognition of the consonant V. Play recorded violin music while sampling veggies and dip to introduce the letter V lesson. Practice writing the letter. Help children make rows of straight, angled lines, then demonstrate how to make a pair of the lines that intersect in a point at the bottom. Choose classroom activities designed around things that start with the letter V.
  1. Vegetable Stamping

    • Since the word "vegetables" begins with the letter V, give your class veggies to use in a stamping activity. Before class buy potatoes, carrots and celery. Wash and dry the vegetables. Cut potatoes in half and slice the pointed tips off carrots. Cut celery stalks into 4 inch long sticks. Cover a table with newspaper and provide 9 by 12 inch sheets of white construction paper. Place three or four tablespoons each of brown, orange and green tempera paint on paper plates. Set the plates on the table with the vegetables. Let children dip the cut vegetables into paint, then stamp them onto paper to make prints. When the pictures are dry, ask the children to write the letter V at the top.

    Vine Activity

    • Provide scissor and fine motor skill practice during a letter V activity. Print letter V shapes onto 8 by 10 inch pieces of green card stock. The Dtlk website has a free, printable template for upper and lower case V. Pass the card-stock and scissors to children. Ask the children to cut out the letters and glue them to violet, 12 by 18 inch sheets of construction paper. Give each child four 24 inch long, green crepe-paper party streamers. Buy rolls of green streamers where party supplies are sold. Ask the children to tightly twist the streamers until they resemble vines. Glue the vines to the paper. Give children markers to draw leaves or flowers along the vines.

    V-Shaped Valentines

    • Fold 9 by 12 inch sheets of red, pink and violet construction paper in half to become a greeting card. Draw a diagonal line from the center of the top of the paper to the center of the folded edge. Draw another line from the middle of the open edge of the paper to the bottom of the folded edge. Make one for each kindergartner. Ask the children to cut along the lines and open the card to reveal the letter V. Provide markers and valentine themed stickers to decorate the V-shaped cards.

    Letter V Collage

    • Before presenting a letter V collage activity, discuss with kindergartners things that begin with the letter V. Talk about violets, vans and vases. Ask children to say more words that begin with V. Write the names of all the things that begin with V on the chalkboard. Give kindergartners stacks of old magazines, scissors and 9 by 12 inch sheets of white construction paper. Let the children cut pictures of things that begin with V from the magazines. Have the children glue the pictures to the paper with glue sticks to make a collage of things that start with V.
