In this activity students work together to arrange the months of the year in the proper order. Print the names of the months on individual index cards and spread them out, in a jumbled order, on the ground. Encourage children to work together to sort through the cards and place them in the correct order. Besides reinforcing the order of the months, this activity also allows children to practice reading the months of the year.
Students work together to help a given student determine the name of a given month. Randomly select a student to stand with her back to the classroom dry erase board or chalkboard and write the name of the month above the student's head. Classmates offer clues to the student standing at the board to help her name the month written on the board above her head. For example, if December is written on the board, children may say, "It's the last month of the year," or "Christmas happens during this month."
Students match the names of the months together in this group activity, which promotes reading the names of the months. On individual index cards, write out the names of the months; write out two sets of cards. Hand out one card to each student in your class. Students must walk around and try to find the student who has the card that matches the card they are holding. Once students pair off, have them stand in a line in the order that the months of the year occur.
In this activity students state things that they can't wait to do in each month. Have students stand in a line and instruct the first person in line to begin with the month of January. This person should say, "In the month of January, I can't wait to ...," and the person says something that she wants to do that pertains to the month. In the given example, the child may say build snowmen, have a snowball fight or celebrate the New Year. The next child in line would state something that he can't wait to do in the month of February and so forth until all students have had a turn (you may have to start the months over again).
