Kindergarten Activities for the Letter D

Children can learn about the letter D in a variety of ways. When teaching kindergartners to memorize the alphabet, you can teach them one letter at a time, using recognizable symbols that children can associate with the letter. Children will remember the letter and learn about subjects that start with each letter of the alphabet, including D.
  1. Alpha-Buddy Doctor D. Doggy Alphabet Craft

    • Make an alpha-buddy Doctor D. Doggy alphabet craft for children 2 years and older. Take a marker and draw a large letter D on colored construction paper. Draw eyes, a round black nose and a mouth. Draw dog ears on both sides on top of the letter D. Use pictures from children's coloring books for inspiration on how to draw a cute dog's face.

Cut out the doggy shape using craft scissors. Glue ears, mouth, spots, nose, eyes, eyebrows and a collar onto the D-shaped dog's head, using construction-paper glue. Draw these dog features on separate, different-colored pieces of construction paper for a layered or multicolored effect. After you cut the features out of the construction paper, glue them onto the dog face and let the craft dry.

Display the doggy cutout by tacking it to a bulletin board or hanging it up. Discuss the cutout with kindergarten-age children and explain about dogs or talk about dog doctors (veterinarians). Explain how veterinarians take care of dogs in the same way that doctors take care of people.

    Dairy Duo Paper Craft

    • Make a dairy duo paper craft to teach children about the dairy food group. Cut out a milk-carton shape from construction paper or print out a template in the shape of a milk carton and then cut the shape out of construction paper using scissors. Use white construction paper for milk and orange construction paper for a similar cheese cutout.

Hold up the various cutouts and explain to the children that each cutout is part of the dairy family, and that the word "dairy" begins with the letter D.

    Dinosaur Crafts

    • Use a template or a cutout drawing of a dinosaur of your choice to teach children about the extinct, prehistoric animals known as dinosaurs. Teach children that these creatures called dinosaurs roamed the Earth millions of years ago. Explain to children that there are many types of dinosaurs with different names, but that as a group they are known as dinosaurs, and the word "dinosaur" begins with the letter D.

    Doggy Paper-Bag Puppets

    • Make doggy puppets to teach children about the letter D. Paper-bag doggy puppets are interactive activities for children. The puppet "comes alive" and will help children remember the letter D. Use the flip part of the bag for the dog's movable head. Draw on the bag using different-colored magic markers or cut out craft paper in eye and nose shapes and glue them onto the bag.
