Kindergarten Activities to Teach the Alphabet

Teaching the alphabet to kindergarten students helps them master the alphabet at a young age. Using games to teach is perfect for students this age. It will help them enjoy school and engages their youthful sense of play. There are many different types of games you can play in your classroom to teach the alphabet.
  1. Beginning Letter

    • Pick a different letter to focus on each time you play this game. Your students list objects or words that start with that letter. Students raise their hand to suggest a word. Write down each object on the board as well as words that don't start with that letter. Continue until each student has gone at least once. Say each word in the list and ask your students if it starts with the right letter. Each time they guess right, sing an alphabet-themed song.

    Building Blocks

    • Take out a collection of letter blocks for each student. These blocks should have at least one letter printed on the side. Make sure you have letter blocks, too. Start by holding up several letter blocks. Arrange these in a specific order. Place them at the front of the classroom so your students can see them. They must try to match the block order using their own blocks. Check to make sure each student has matched your blocks. Give them a small treat, such as a grape or piece of popcorn, each time they match.

    Snowman Matching

    • Print out a series of snowmen with unattached snowmen hats. Print out a different upper case letter on each snowman belly. Each hat should have a matching lower case letter. Make enough snowmen for each of your students to have at least five snowmen. Students try to match the upper and lower case letters on the snowmen. They glue the hats to the top of the snowmen heads after they have clarified with you that it is the correct match. Give the student who finishes the quickest a small reward, like a piece of candy. Let students color the snowmen to hang up on the classroom walls or to take home.

    A Is For ...

    • Sit your students in a large circle at the front of the class. Sing the alphabet song to help refresh their alphabet memory. Write a song about the different letters of the alphabet. The lyrics should follow the format of "A is for apple, B is for box, C is for cat..." through the entire song. Don't write objects for the different letters. Instead, pause after saying "A is for..." and pick a student to name a word that starts with A. Write this letter on the board. Go through the whole alphabet this way. Sing the song again but use the words your students have picked. Sing it a few times so they can remember it well. Pick new words each time you play this game.
