How to Teach the Alphabet in Preschool

"I struggled through the alphabet as if it had been a bramble-bush; getting considerably worried and scratched by every letter." Even Charles Dickens, the great literary author of "Great Expectations" struggled with learning the alphabet. Teaching the alphabet to children requires time and patience as you are laying an important foundation for their future learning. Children at the ages of 3-5 are naturally curious and interested in learning, making this an ideal time to start.

Teach letter recognition. Assign one alphabet letter either per day or per week. Associate everyday things with the letter of the day. A simple way to teach letters is to surround your students with the alphabet. Be sure to hang an alphabet chart or alphabet posters so that students are surrounded with letters. Reading alphabet books is another way to reinforce the visual identification of letters.

Set up an alphabet learning center in your classroom. Alphabet puzzles are perfect for preschoolers and fun to do. Put out letter stamps at a craft center for your students to explore. If your classroom has computers for students, let students use an online alphabet tutorial designed for preschoolers. Be sure to establish a rotation schedule for their use.

Have an ABC hunt in the backyard or in the house. Place objects around for children to find, giving them letter-only clues. Be sure to use safe items, and ensure items are placed in safe areas. Try a matching game. Make or buy an inexpensive "Match Me" alphabet card set. If you are an artistic parent, you can create your own set of matching cards. Simple index cards also work for this project.
