How to Teach Letter Formation in Preschool

Parents can help their preschool child learn proper letter formation by practicing drawing the letters of the alphabet at home. Proper letter formation is an important skill that requires use of fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. Practice drawing letters in both upper and lower case to develop good penmanship. Learning to draw the alphabet is a process that requires patience and encouragement. As with any skill, the more the child practices, the better she will become at letter formation.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a letter tracing sheet for each letter of the alphabet. Use word processing software or hand draw each practice sheet. Draw one letter in uppercase and in lowercase on each practice sheet.

    • 2

Create arrows to indicate the direction of pencil stroke when the student draws each line of the letter. Re-create two sets of primary printing style lines underneath the alphabet letter by drawing a solid top line, dotted center line and a solid bottom line.

    • 3

Draw the letter using dotted lines that the student can trace. Draw the uppercase letter using dotted lines on the top set of lines. Draw the lowercase dotted line letter on the second set of lines. Draw the dotted line letter several times on each set of lines.

    • 4

Instruct the student on the proper way to hold a pencil. Help the student trace the first letter on each line by indicating where to place the pencil to begin drawing the letter. Show the student the arrows that indicate the direction to draw each line of the letter. Continue through the entire alphabet.
