How to Teach the Alphabet in Kindergarten

Young children must learn the the alphabet so that they can learn to read. Kindergartners may find it difficult to put letters together to form words, but they must be able to recognize the shapes and sounds of letters. Make this lesson more interesting by using activities that help young students learn and remember the letters of the alphabet.

Instructions

    • 1

Write each letter of the alphabet on a separate piece of paper. Put the pieces of paper into a bag or hat. Have each student randomly remove one of the pieces and draw an object that begins with his letter. Help the students if necessary.

    • 2

Acquaint students with the shapes of letters using modeling clay. Start by working on one letter each day and proceed through the alphabet. Help students shape the letter, emphasizing that some letters are rounded and others have straight lines. After reaching the end of the alphabet, have the students form their names using modeling clay. Put the names on display.

    • 3

Assign each child a letter of the alphabet. Bring in nature magazines and have each student find a picture of an animal that begins with his letter and clip it from the magazine. Have students glue their pictures to sheets of paper and write the animals' names underneath. Display the pictures on the wall in an alphabet zoo.

    • 4

Write each letter of the alphabet on a large sheet of paper. Place the sheets on the floor around the classroom. Have each student walk through the classroom separately. Have another student yell "freeze" randomly. The first student must then pick up the letter closest to him, identify the letter and say a word that begins with it.
