Teach preschoolers to make their own silly putty. Place 1 cup of water and 1 cup of Borax, powdered soap or liquid starch into a container, such as a bowl or jar. Mix it together and let it sit a few minutes. Put 1 tbsp. of children's craft glue into a plastic bag with 1 tsp. of water to break down the glue, and add food coloring of your choice. Add 1 tbsp. of the liquid starch and water to the plastic bag and mix it together. While in the bag, mix the goo for two to three minutes until it firms. Take the goo out of the bag and squeeze it in your hands to help with the consistency. After a few minutes, you will have silly putty.
Purchase a hand or foot imprint kit. Kits usually come with cement and all of the supplies you need to create a memorable piece for your preschooler. For most kits, you are only required to add water, allow to the mix to set and then place the hand or foot in the mixture for several seconds in order to make the mold. These kits are ooey gooey and require you to thoroughly wash the hand and foot of the child who has made the imprint.
Make fluffy paint to finger paint with. Purchase powdered paint or food coloring and mix it with 2/3 cup soap flakes. Add about 1/3 cup of water to this mixture. Mix the ingredients together carefully so as not to splash the paint. This can be done in a bowl or even in a bucket. You will know when the mix is complete as it will look fluffy, and will feel fluffy or lightweight to the touch. Allow the kids to use their fingers to paint an array of pictures on construction paper provided.
Make traditional cookie batter to bake into cookies with your preschooler. A packaged cookie mix is easiest as generally all you have to add is an egg and water. Then you can allow your preschooler to mix the cookie dough by hand which will give him the ooey, gooey effect. However, if you choose to make the recipe from scratch, be ready to teach your preschooler measuring basics so that he is ready for the hard work next time.
