Preschoolers can learn how to write the letter G by tracing it over and over again on paper with crayons. Tracing activities give students practice making the motion of the letter with their hand so that they learn how to re-create the letter on their own by memory. For tracing activities, provide students with paper templates of capital and lowercase G letters, along with tracing paper to place over it. After preschoolers trace the letter a few times, allow them to color it in using their crayons.
A recognizing activity is one where preschoolers must identify the letter G out of a stack of other letters. You may use plastic letters, cardboard letters, or alphabet blocks for this activity. Scramble a pile of alphabet letters and instruct the students to dig out the letter G. Have them continue performing this activity until they can easily identify the letter G.
You can teach preschoolers about the significance of the letter G by introducing them to objects that start with G. For instance, you can bring in grapes for kids to eat as a snack, and teach them that the word "grape" starts with the letter G. You might also bring in a stuffed gorilla doll or a toy guitar to pass around. Preschoolers can learn to make the association between words that start with the letter G and the sounds that G makes. For an extended activity, set up the room with a variety of letter G objects and tell kids to wander around and pick up the objects that start with the letter G.
Have your preschoolers create an arts and crafts project as a G-letter activity. You might instruct them to make giraffes out of brown lunch bags, color in a picture of a goat, or draw ghosts, if you are planning this activity around Halloween. Create a classroom collage using pictures that start with the letter G that students cut out from magazines. Another arts and crafts activity for the letter G is to make the letter using clay.
