Help the kids to appreciate the value of rain by reading them stories like "Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain" by Verna Aardema, "Rain Makes Applesauce" by Julian Sheer or "Rain" by Robert Kalan. Talk about the stories after reading and teach them how rain helps the environment by cooling the air and feeding plants and animals.
Take the kids outside to play in the rain. Make sure the students have umbrellas and rain gear. Help them to collect rain samples in buckets and then make puddles. The kids can also splash in the puddles and put leaves and sticks in these mini ponds. Play games such as hopscotch or give the kids miniature boats to float in the puddles.
Encourage the kids to make crafts about the rain. They can make a rain painting on a paper plate with blue glitter for rain drops and animals in the rain. They can also cut out rain drops from blue paper and glue these on card stock to make a rain collage. Encourage them to put tree or cloud stickers and other drawings on the collage to imitate outdoor scenes. They can also use cotton balls to make clouds.
Ask the kids to write songs about the rain. Sing the songs together as a class and play music. Dance around or play musical chairs with the children while singing their songs. You can also sing classic songs about the rain or play CDs with rain sounds.
