Creating poppy flowers to display at school or at the child's home allows preschoolers to show they remember their veterans. Coffee-filter poppies can be made by painting the filters red with craft paint, markers or watercolors, and layering them on top of each other, cutting rippled edges if desired. Poke a hole through the middle of the filters with a green chenille stem, bending the tip over on the front of the red flower and then gluing a black pompom into the middle to secure the stem. Red tissue paper or construction paper can be used in place of coffee filters, allowing you to skip the painting step when working with younger preschoolers.
A poppy wreath can be hung on school windows or given to a local veteran. Create a wreath by tracing children's hands on green paper, and having the students cut out the hands. Glue four hands together at the palm so the fingers fan out, or glue the fingers to palm, forming a circle shape. Cut out a poppy from red construction paper, and glue it to the center or bottom of the wreath, adding a dot of black paint in the middle. For another wreath idea, cut out the middle of a paper plate for each child, and have the students color or paint their wreaths green. Have them draw poppies on their wreath or glue on teacher-created construction paper poppies.
Allow preschoolers to paint poppies, using their fingers or a potato. For fingerprint poppies, dip each student's thumb or finger into red paint, and have them stamp their finger to make four poppy pedals in a square shape. Dip another finger into green or black paint, and have the child place it in the middle of the poppy. To create potato-print poppies, cut a potato in half, and use a paring knife to carve a poppy shape into the potato. Have students dip the potato in red paint, and stamp the image on construction paper. Add green or black buttons to the middle of the poppies if desired.
Allow students to create a field of poppies with their poppy flowers by placing chenille stems into the ground. Use the painted poppies as a decoration on the outside of a Remembrance Day card, and work with preschoolers to write a note to a veteran on the inside. Have the preschoolers glue a single painted poppy to a safety pin to create a poppy to wear on Remembrance Day.
