Star of David Crafts for Preschool

The Star of David is a well recognized Jewish symbol that preschool teachers can easily turn into a culture filled craft experience. As a six pointed star, or hexagram, the Star of David features two inverted triangles that are woven together. From painted prints to craft stick mobiles, star themed crafts can be an imaginative addition to a religious, holiday or even shape theme.
  1. Scratch Prints

    • Preschoolers can explore printing techniques by creating basic Star of David artwork. Have the children draw the star, two inverted triangles connected together, onto a piece of scratch foam with the end of a craft stick or toothpick. The lines must be deep enough to see, without poking through. Use a brayer or roller sponge to cover the scratch foam picture plate with acrylic or tempera paint. Do not push the paint into the grooves of the star or the lines will not show on the print. Press a piece of construction paper on top of the painted plate and press or roll with a clean brayer. Pull off the paper and repeat for multiple images.

    Tracings

    • Preschoolers who are just beginning to learn their shapes can benefit by creating a simple Star of David tracing craft. Pre-cut identically sized triangles from heavy card stock or cardboard. Reuse the sides of an old box to save money on your craft supplies. Give each child a triangle and piece of light colored construction paper. The child can then place the triangle onto the paper, point side up and trace. Ask the children to turn the triangle upside down and place it on top of the first triangle tracing it to complete the drawing.

    Craft Stick Mobile

    • Give each preschooler six craft sticks and a bottle of quick drying, non-toxic craft glue. The children can glue the first three sticks into a triangle shape. Repeat with the other sticks. After the triangles are dry, ask the children to turn one triangle upside down and place it onto the other, gluing them together. Repeat the steps to create at least two more stars. Decorate the stars with paint or markers. Finish the craft by tying a piece of yarn to the top point of each star and attaching to a 12-inch long wooden dowel or stick.

    Collage

    • Pre-cut cardboard six point stars that are at least 10 inches by 10 inches from top to bottom and side to side. This will be the base for the collage. Provide the students with magazines, brochures or printed papers that feature the Star of David. Ask them to cut out the stars. Set out a variety of different textures of fabric scraps in an array of colors. Invite the children to cut the fabric and glue the pieces, along with the cut Star of David photos onto the cardboard star.
