How to Help Children Improve Their Reading Levels

Illiteracy is a problem millions of adults suffer and one that no child should go through life facing. Reading is one of the most important things a child learns, because reading is imperative to success in life; it is everywhere. Parents with children that are not reading their accepted level need to encourage them to improve their reading. Use several methods to teach your child needed reading skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Read every day with your child. Make it a nightly routine to read a story before bed or during the afternoon. Children learn best in a consistent, structured environment. Reading comprehension levels improve when it is practiced on a daily basis.

    • 2

Encourage your child to read things other than books. When you're in the car, have her read street signs, stop signs and billboards for practice. Ask her to read the headline on a magazine in the doctor's office or the menu at a restaurant.

    • 3

Provide your child with an abundance of reading materials. The more books your child has, the more variety she has from which to choose. Make regular trips to the library with your child to check out books and to participate in story hours provided by the library system.

    • 4

Speak with your child's teacher about her progress in school. Between the two of you, you can figure out her strong and weak points, and devise a system to improve her reading skills by working with her on the elements she cannot figure out.

    • 5

Watch for problems, such as dyslexia or other learning disabilities. Not all reading problems are a direct result of not being able to read, but may be due to bigger problem.
