Practice handwriting daily. Download practice sheets at school handwriting websites. Have your child practice writing for at least twenty minutes each session.
Have your child play with items that have very small pieces and require manipulation. Manipulating small items allow children to strengthen the small muscles used when they write. Use Lego pieces, puzzles, tiny action figures and other small toys.
Engage in art activities, such as coloring, painting and cutting items. Handling scissors, crayons and paintbrushes require children to use the same muscles used when writing.
Allow your child to tie his own shoes and button his shirts. These activities improve fine motor skills and condition the small muscles in a child's hands.
