Throw a ball to the child who needs to improve his gross motor skills. Let him throw it back to you and practice playing catch in this manner.
Tell your child to practice kicking the ball with both feet, controlling the movement and direction of the ball. Let your child try bouncing the ball off his knees, alternating it in the air between knees.
Play the game "Simon Says" with your child to introduce new movements and activities. For example, you could say "Simon says do jumping jacks" or "Simon says crawl around the floor" or "Simon says gallop like a horse."
Take turns with your child mimicking the movements of animals, such as creeping like a turtle, leaping like a cat and flapping your arms like a bird. These activities not only help your child's imagination, but she will probably be amused to see you act like all those animals.
Purchase for your child a toy he'll use for a very long time that will assist in developing gross motor skills such as a bicycle, pogo stick, trampoline or jump rope.
Give your child a piece of construction paper and ask her to cut it into long strips. Tell her to try to make her cuts as straight as possible. Praise her generously.
Give your child a circular piece of construction paper. Tell your child to fold the circle in half and then in half again and in half again. Let her take her time and make firm, solid creases.
Tell her to cut shapes along the folds of the paper. When she unfolds it, she will find that she has made a snowflake. Give your child multiple sheets of paper and let her practice and discover how cutting different shapes will give her a different snowflake.
Buy a large bag of brightly colored beads of different shapes and textures and have your child pick up each bead, by pinching it between two fingers, and drop it into the bowl. Tell your child to count each bead in this fashion.
Purchase grown-up sculpting clay for your child as opposed to Play-Doh or other comparable brands. This clay is tougher to mold and will work your child's fingers more vigorously. Let your child sculpt whatever she likes.
