How to Improve Visual Perceptual Skills

Visual perceptual skills are crucial to learning and reading. If your child is struggling in school, test visual perceptual skills to determine if such problems are the cause. Symptoms of visual perceptual problems include reversed letters, inability to copy accurately, itchy eyes, difficulty cutting, eyes hurting, inability to follow printing across a page. There are ways to improve visual skills and relieve the child's difficulties. Find free online resources to assist the child, but discuss the problems with teachers and doctors. It is crucial for the child to practice daily.

Instructions

    • 1

Print mazes from the Internet and have your child regularly practice following the path from beginning to the end. Repetition and practice help strengthen tracking and following visual clues. Giving your child a choice of mazes helps them build success on puzzles they are comfortable with.

    • 2

Use printed pages or books of hidden pictures to make it fun to track and find objects. Depending on the child's age and interest, start with easy pictures and work up in skill level based on the child's progress. Assist the child by giving them a general area to look for a particular object.

    • 3

Use memory card games to help your child develop visual skills and recognize objects. Repetition helps strengthen the child's visual memory as well as confidence.

    • 4

Use shape-recognition worksheets or Web site to practice observing the original shape and find a match within shapes given. Introduce shape recognition after the child has been practicing the other methods.

    • 5

Use "I Spy" books to encourage the child to build visual skills. Sit with the child and allow him to impress you with the improvements made.

    • 6

Encourage your child to write a daily journal about any subject. Building visual perceptual skills improves writing, so giving your child the freedom to write anything empowers him to be creative.
