How Parents Can Help With Reading at Home

Whether your child is not interested in reading, or has trouble with the fundamentals of pronouncing words and comprehending the content, you can help them develop an interest in reading. Designated family reading time, trips to the library, and comfortable areas to read around the house, all help to foster interest in books. Since each child learns at his own pace, encouraging and assisting them to read at home, can turn troubled readers into passionate bookworms.

Instructions

    • 1

Accompany your child to the library. Allow your child to pick out books that interest him. While you are there, ask the librarian if there are any reading programs, or activities that encourage reading at home.

    • 2

Read with your child every day, if possible. The more your child practices reading, the quicker and more proficient he will be. Encourage your child to read library books, cereal boxes, restaurant menus, grocery store labels and more. During family time, read to your children and let them follow along, so they can hear the correct pronunciation of the words. The more you read with them, the more they will find reading fun.

    • 3

Purchase books that have easy-to-understand plots, simple vocabulary, illustrations and engaging content. Whether your child struggles with reading, or is just starting out, easy books keep the words and sentences simple, so your child does not become discouraged.
