Organization Techniques for Students

Organization and time management are crucial to academic success. However, many students struggle with organization. Some students do not know how to become organized while others cannot understand the organizational methods used in their classroom. Help your students discover and put into practice the organization methods that work best for them.
  1. To Do Lists

    • Help your child make to do lists every day to manage her time. Demonstrate how to prioritize tasks by placing urgent tasks at the top of the list and less urgent tasks at the bottom. Include items to be completed at school as well as chores at home, homework and extracurricular activities. As your child completes a task, encourage her to mark the item off her list -- this will give her a sense of accomplishment.

    Calendar

    • Help your child -- and your entire family -- stay organized with calendars. Your child should have his own homework calendar or planner that lists assignments, tests and special events. In addition, keep a family calendar that lists work and school schedules, extracurricular activities, your child's upcoming assignments and special events. Post the calendar where everyone in the family can access it. If you have a large family, assign each family a different color to avoid confusion.

    Homework Center

    • A student who is organized at home is more likely to be organized in school as well. Designate a specific area of the house for your child to complete and store school assignments, books and other supplies. Scholastic.com suggests that parents create a "study kit" for their children that includes the necessary supplies like paper, pens, erasers and art supplies. Place a hook nearby for your child to hang her book bag; this will make it easy to keep everything she needs all in one place.

    Binders

    • Purchase binders, folders and dividers for your child to keep school supplies organized. One binder divided into different subjects will work well for elementary students while middle and high school students may need a separate binder for each class. Help your child sort through and organize notes, handouts and completed assignments. Offer guidance as your child organizes his notebook, but let him find a system that will work for him.
