Teacher of the Month Ideas

Recognizing educators for excellence in teaching is an important component in encouraging high standards. "Teacher of the Month" recognition can be promoted both at the school and district level, as well as involving the community. Such formal recognition is a great way to thank those educators who are striving to elevate academic achievement. Plan your recognition opportunities ahead of time and publicize the winners.
  1. District Recognition

    • Most school districts have a monthly board meeting that could provide the opportunity to recognize excellence in teaching. As a conclusion to the meeting, present the "teacher of the month" winners from each of the district schools and have them come to the platform for applause. If funds allow, award them a gift; certificates to a local store or restaurant are always appreciated or consider paying for a continuing education class or special in-service training.

    School Recognition

    • A school PTO/PTA, a committee organized by the school principal or faculty or a volunteer group of parents can structure a process for nominating and recognizing teacher excellence each month. Encourage students to write notes of appreciation and present them to the teacher in a ceremony. Or sponsor a special luncheon where the teacher of the month is recognized and treated to a catered meal on the school property.

    Student-Sponsored Recognition

    • Many teachers have indicated that some of the most memorable recognition they've received was from the students themselves, in handwritten notes and cards. Organize a process for the students to nominate a favorite teacher. Students should write brief letters nominating a teacher and state why they think she deserves recognition. Decide on the criteria for choosing a monthly winner, such as the teacher receiving the most nominations or the teacher who received the most impressive nomination. Frame the nomination letters or compile them in a special booklet form for an award. Have the students assist the principal in presenting the award to the teacher.

    Community Recognition

    • Local newspapers cover stories about excellence in community schools.

Business partners in the community can go a long way to helping build excellence at their local schools by sponsoring a "Teacher of the Month" contest. Different businesses can work together to trade months sponsoring the event or one business may wish to sponsor it. Have the schools ask parents to go to the website of the business and nominate a teacher. After nominations are closed, have the parents vote on their top teacher choice. Work with your local paper to report on the teachers of the month selected. The sponsoring business will supply a gift award for the monthly winners.
