Grilled sandwiches are simple to do without an oven or stovetop. Prepare the items in class or at home with a griddle or Panini maker. These two tools are portable and offer easy clean-up after the demonstration. Prepare your ingredients in advance to accommodate the amount of time you have to complete the demonstration. Decide what type of sandwich you want to demonstrate, such as hot ham and turkey, grilled chicken and bacon or the favorite -- grilled cheese. Explain what happens to the sandwich when it heats up.
This Mexican favorite is simple to make and delicious to eat. Quesadillas are an ideal demonstration food because the kids can add their favorite things they like to eat. Bring along a large bag of small size tortillas, a griddle and a vast assortment of fresh vegetables and cheese to place inside the quesadilla. If time allows, invite each child or a group of children up to make their quesadilla and have them watch how to cook it on the griddle. Talk with the children to explain what a quesadilla is and how the quesadilla can contain a variety of different ingredients to accommodate every taste bud.
Pizza is simple and easy to make for children. Set your area up with a griddle to cook the pizza and the ingredients separated for easy access. Pizza toppings, such as hamburger, bacon and other raw meat should be pre-cooked. Purchase pre-made pizza crusts and sauce. Invite students to make their own pizzas or make them for each child in the demonstration. If time is an issue, simply purchase a large pizza crust and make one large pizza for the entire class. Ask the class what their favorite pizza combination is and take a vote to see what combination or ingredient is the most favored.
Pancakes are a breakfast staple and easy to whip together. Make the pancakes from scratch by showing the kids how to measure the flour, sugar, eggs and milk. Cook the pancakes on the griddle for kids to watch the bubbles rise and show them how you flip with an extra large spatula. Serve the kids the pancakes once they are done cooking. Give as much information about what each ingredient does to help the pancake taste amazing.
