Preschool Crafts on Black Sheep

Your preschoolers can make black sheep crafts in conjunction with a unit on the farm or when learning the song/rhyme Baa Baa Black Sheep. Children can practice cutting, gluing, painting and coloring skills as they work on these crafts to take home and show their families. Though different types of crafts, children can wear masks to act out Baa Baa Black Sheep or even make black sheep puppets for a puppet show.
  1. Handprint Black Sheep

    • Help the children trace their handprint with a white pencil on a piece of black construction paper and cut it out. Give each child a small pile of 100 percent cotton, small cotton balls that you have already dyed black using liquid black dye, and a small paper plate with a dollop of school glue. Show them how to dip each cotton ball in the glue and immediately stick it to the palm of the handprint (the body) or the thumb (head). They should not put any cotton balls on the fingers of the handprint (the legs). Squeeze a small bit of glue where eyes with movable pupils should be placed and guide the children if they need help to position the eyes.

    Origami Black Sheep

    • Older preschoolers can make an origami sheep using 12-inch square pieces of black paper. Show the children each step and watch them copy you. Fold the paper on the diagonal and crease. Turn the point toward yourself, fold the triangle in half, crease and open the fold back up. On the side opposite the tip of the triangle, fold over each corner enough to make two ears. Glue several 100 percent cotton small cotton balls dyed black across the top of the head. Glue on eyes with movable pupils. Where the nose will be, fold the tip of the triangle under about 1/2-inch. Glue on a nose cut out of gray paper. Optionally, you can attach these to paint sticks to make puppets.

    Sponge-Painted Black Sheep

    • Photocopy a large line drawing of a sheep on an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch piece of white paper. Cut synthetic flat kitchen sponges into squares. Have the children put on art smocks. Give each child a small container of black tempra paint and a damp sponge square. Show them how to dip the sponge lightly in the paint and lightly press the sponge on the sheep repeatedly until it is covered with black paint. Let the paint dry.

    Black Sheep Masks

    • Precut eye holes in paper plates. Cut out two u-shaped ears per child from black craft fur. Have the children color the bottom of a paper plate black. Help them position the ears and staple them to the plate. Give them several 100 percent cotton small cotton balls dyed black to glue across the top of the head. Help them punch a hole on both sides of the paper plate to thread narrow black elastic through and knot to hold the masks on their heads.
