Use dolls to teach students about clothing in a dramatic play area. Provide students with dolls in a variety of sizes, including life-sized dolls if possible. In addition, give children different clothing to put on their dolls. Include shirts and pants that have buttons and zippers for students to practice with. Include summer clothes, winter clothes and accessories. Time students to see who can dress his doll the fastest.
Teach students to dress appropriately no matter what the weather. Cut out a variety of pictures featuring different weather situations, including a sunny beach, a winter scene or a street filled with rain puddles. Draw the outline of a person on white paper and make copies; give each student three copies. Hold up a picture and ask students to draw clothes on their paper that match the scene. For example, students might draw a swimsuit, shorts or T-shirt for a beach scene.
Make a clothesline in your classroom of all the clothes students are wearing. Draw simple pants, shorts, socks, shoes and shirts on white card stock. Give each student pictures to match the clothes they are wearing. Help students cut out the pictures. Provide markers and ask students to color the clothing to match what they are wearing; encourage students to use classroom mirrors in this activity. Hang a string across a bulletin board and ask students to give you their paper clothes. Shuffle the clothes and hang them on the string. Ask students to choose a piece of paper clothing from the clothesline and match it to the student wearing that clothing.
Make flashcards to help your students learn about clothing. Draw simple pictures of clothing on blank index cards. Make two cards for each type of clothing to create a memory game, or simply hold up each card and ask students what type of clothing is on the card. Make sets of cards for different occasions, such as the beach, winter, school and sleeping. Ask students to choose cards for all the items they would need to get dressed; e.g., pants, shirt, shoes and socks.
