Cut out a carrot shape from a paper plate for each child. Provide carrots cut into various shapes like circle slices, whole carrots sliced from top to bottom in half, and carrot sticks. Stir red and yellow food coloring into plain yogurt or clear syrup to make orange edible paints. Put a small amount of the orange "paint" onto a paper plate with at least one of each shape of carrot piece for each child. Have the preschoolers dip different shapes of carrot pieces into the orange substance, and press them onto the carrot-shaped cutout. Allow them to lick their fingers, take bites from the carrots to make different shapes, and create their pictures the way they want them to look.
Give each child a circular-shaped piece of orange tissue paper. Have children fold the circle in half. Provide orange fruit snacks, jelly beans or orange-candy-coated chocolate or peanut butter candies. Have each child spoon some of the edible items onto the center of his folded tissue paper. Help him roll the half-circle into a carrot-like shape. Tape the seams along the sides, top and bottom of the carrot shape. The children can also tape on some crumpled green tissue paper to make a green top for the carrot. Discuss the color of the carrot and the things the children put inside to focus on the color orange.
Have the children make carrot sun catchers to hang in the classroom window. Give each preschooler a carrot shape cut from a clear transparency sheet. Preschoolers should use craft brushes to cover the plastic shape with diluted glue. Have them tear small pieces of tissue paper and place them in the glue. The children can also glue a green construction paper top onto their carrots. Tape a piece of string onto each carrot and hang them all in a window.
Give each child at least four "snow cone" type paper cups, with a pointed bottom. The preschoolers should flatten each cup to make a triangle shape. Allow the children to choose from a variety of art processes to color their carrots orange. Suggestions are spray bottles with liquid water colors or glitter glue for painting the carrots. Also consider orange pompoms, tissue paper to crumple, orange yarn pieces or felt scraps to glue onto the flattened cups. Punch a hole in the top of each carrot and tie a string through the hole. Tie the other end of the string onto the edge of a green paper plate to form a carousel-type mobile. Tape a loop of yarn to the center top of the plate to hang up the mobiles.
