Preschool Number Crafts

By the time children reach kindergarten, they'll be expected to have at least a basic understanding of numbers. Rather than show children boring posters, make numbers interesting by incorporating them into craft projects. These crafts can double as classroom displays, giving children even more exposure to numbers. If preschoolers are able to count and write numbers up to at least 10, they'll be well prepared to start kindergarten.
  1. Phones

    • Many preschoolers learn by mimicking the things they see adults do, so they'll enjoy having their own pretend phones to use. Cut cardboard into rectangles that are about the same size as a cordless phone. Children can paint their phones or tape paper onto them. Show children a large picture of a phone number pad so they can copy the numbers onto their own phones. Once their phones are done, point out how to dial 911 in the case of an emergency.

    Books

    • Counting books allow children to review their numbers anytime they want. Give each child 10 index cards. Ask children to write each number from 1 to 10 on one card, then pass out bottles of glue and bowls of buttons or dried beans. Preschoolers can glue a corresponding number of beads onto each card. For instance, they would glue five beans onto the 5 card. When the glue dries, punch holes in the corner of each card and tie them together into a book.

    Calendars

    • Once children have mastered counting up to 10, use calendar projects to teach them to count higher. Draw grids onto paper. Each grid should have seven spaces across and five spaces down. Write the days of the week across the top of the calendar or ask each child to write the names himself. Show children a copy of the next month's calendar and point out what day the first of the month falls on; ask children to number the spaces on their own calendars accordingly. When the spaces are numbered, invite children to decorate their calendars.

    Collages

    • Number collages help children practice counting and writing at the same time. Pass out pieces of paper and art supplies. Help each child to make a collage using each number from 1 to 10. Ask children to repeat the numbers throughout their collages. For instance, they would include four 4s and six 6s somewhere in their collages. Rather than drawing the numbers, you may also pass out magazines and newspapers. Ask children to look for and cut out numbers to glue to their collages.
