Create a fish scene with tracings of shoes. Ask the kids to place one of their shoes on a piece of paper. Show them how to trace the outline of their shoes with a piece of chalk, large crayon, or pencil. Then let them turn their shoe tracings into fish. Add fins, gills, eyes, and scales with stickers, chalk, crayons, or markers. Cut out all of the fish and glue or tape them to a large sheet of blue paper to create an underwater scene.
Incorporate music appreciation while creating abstract art. Choose several styles of music: a drum solo, soft classical guitar music, or even nature sounds. Place a sheet of paper in front of each child and tell him to start by placing the tip of his pencil in the middle of the paper. When you turn on the music, tell the children to close their eyes and move their pencils around their paper according to the beat or to feelings they have while listening to the particular piece. Change the music while they are drawing until their pages are mostly full. Have them open their eyes and color the spaces between the lines they drew.
Create colorful art for your windows with wax paper, colored tissue paper, and spray starch. Place a sheet of wax paper in front of each child. Fold it in half, crease it, and then open it. Have the children tear pieces of colored tissue paper and place the pieces one side of their wax paper. Let them randomly layer several small pieces to cover the wax paper. Spray the tissue paper collage with spray starch. Fold the wax paper and press all the air bubbles out with your hands. Let the collages dry and hang them on a window.
