How to Make Inference Books for Kindergarten

The notion of inference is one you should start teaching to children at an early age. It helps a child begin to develop reasoning abilities and critical thinking when she learns to infer what is going to happen next in a situation. Many teachers in the elementary grades will use storybooks to teach this skill. However, children in kindergarten often do not yet have the reading skills necessary to for this approach. Instead, you can create a picture book that you can use to help them develop inference skills.

Instructions

  1. Start teaching inference skills to children at a young age.

Write out on paper the ideas for the scenes you will create in your book. For example, you could have a page with a man carefully stepping onto a skating rink. The next page could be of him falling. Or you could have a page with a child picking up an apple from a bowl., with the next being the child biting the apple.

Gather or create the images you need for your book. If you can find photos online that suite your needs, you can print them out on sheets of paper. Otherwise, you can make simple hand drawings on paper and color them in with markers or crayons.

Use a hole punch to punch out holes so you can put the pages of your book in a binder.
