Cutting Activities With Penguins

Using scissors to cut out shapes or to cut in a straight line requires fine muscle control and hand-eye coordination. Children can practice cutting paper, felt, thin foam, yarn and thin cardboard using safe, dull scissors. If you are teaching a unit about penguins, you can incorporate cutting activities.
  1. Egg-Shaped Penguin

    • Print out the penguin craft template found on the First School website. Have the children cut out the pieces of the template and trace them onto black and white thin foam or felt. The largest oval and the two smallest ovals should be traced onto black material and the medium oval should be traced onto white material. The feet, beak and bow tie can be the child's color of choice. Have them cut out the traced shapes. Next, the medium white oval should be glued to the larger black oval to form the body. The small black ovals can be glued to the body to make wings. Glue on googly eyes and the penguin's feet, beak and bow tie.

    Lunch Sack Penguins

    • Stuff a brown paper lunch sack with newspaper and use a stapler to close the bag. Have children paint the whole bag with black paint. As the paint dries, help the children cut out a white oval for the belly and an orange beak. Children can cut eyes out of colored construction paper or use googly eyes. Some children may want to cut out bow ties or scarves for their penguins. Children can glue the cutout pieces to the bag to construct the penguin.

    Valentine Penguin

    • This valentine penguin can be cut out using a template available on the DLTK website. Print out the black and white penguin template and have the children color the hearts that will be used for the body, beak and feet. Help the kids cut out all their hearts. Have the children glue the medium-sized heart to the largest heart, forming the body and the belly. Next, have them glue one small heart below the eyes to form the beak and two small hearts on the bottom of the body as feet. The two skinny hearts can be glued to the sides to make wings.

    Standalone Penguins

    • Penguins made out of toilet paper rolls can stand on their own. Have children paint their toilet paper rolls with black paint. While the paint is drying, give the children white and orange felt to make the belly, beak and feet. Help the children cut a white circle or oval for the belly, an orange triangle for a beak and two orange feet. Use glue to secure the pieces to the toilet paper roll.
