Fold four pieces of the printer paper in half. Your fold should bisect the paper and be parallel with the shorter side of the paper. You will see immediately that you now have the foundation for a book.
Cut out two pieces of poster board to make the front and back of the book. They can be the same size as the pages or slightly larger, as you wish.
Select several phonograms to focus on with your small story books. Phonograms are letter groupings that create a sound that is not like the sound you would expect from the letters if you sounded them out phonetically. For example, the "oa" in "boat" makes a long "o" sound instead of "Aw, Ah" as you might expect it to if you were reading phonetically. Children need a lot of practice with phonograms because they do not behave "logically" according to the phonetic sounds that students learn when they first encounter the letters of the alphabet.
Write a phonogram on the front of each book using the black marker. You might use "ee," for example. Each book should only focus on a single phonogram.
Cut out pictures that are brightly colored and interesting to look at. Make sure that you will be able to write a sentence about the picture that uses the phonogram that you are focusing on in the book. For example, you might select a picture of someone feeding birds, someone reading and someone doing a good deed. All of these things have words that contain the "ee" sound. These pictures should be real pictures rather than cartoons whenever possible.
Glue a single picture to each page of the small story book. You will have one picture on each page. Use a lot of glue so that the pictures do not peel or raise around the edges.
Write a sentence using a word with the appropriate phonogram underneath each picture. Make sure that you use simple words for the entire sentence and that you do not use words that contain phonograms other than the one that the book is intended to practice with the student. Make sure that you write clearly and form your letters correctly.
Staple all the pages and the covers together. You can place two or three staples at even intervals along the fold of the pages to make a booklet.
