How to Make a Booklet of the Different Textures With Preschoolers

Preschoolers learn through hands-on experiences. Tactile, sensory activities build vocabulary and develop a better understanding of the world for preschoolers. Exploring textures through books and toys allows a preschool child to make sense of common objects and relate to new experiences. For example a cotton ball is fuzzy and soft. The child can apply this sensory experience to a new event ,like touching a rabbit or chick at a petting zoo.

Instructions

  1. Completing the pages

    • 1
White glue dries clear and works best when working with young children.

Glue each of the following to its own piece of construction paper: cotton balls, sandpaper, satin fabric, twine, nylon cord, popsicle stick and feathers. Allow the glue to dry before next step.

    • 2
You can use a different color crayon or marker for each page.

Brainstorm descriptive words for each page with the child. The adult can write the words on each page with a crayon or marker.

    • 3
Use a paper punch to easily make the holes to bind the book.

Punch three holes on the edge of each page in the same position. These holes will be used to assemble the book.

    Assembling the book

    • 4

Allow your child to make a collage of all of the left over materials on a piece of construction paper. Punch three holes in this paper in the same position as the rest of the pages. This is the cover of the book.

    • 5
Use any color of yarn that coordinates with the pages of the book.

Assemble the book by stacking the pages and threading a piece of yarn through each hole and tying the yarn into bows.

    • 6

Write the title and author of the book on the cover. One suggested title is, "My Texture Book."

    • 7
      Read the book together.

Read the book with your preschooler. Touch the textures on each page as you say the words for that page.
