Cut the construction paper to size so that it can wrap around the coffee can or oatmeal canister. Once the paper is cut, lay it flat and let the child decorate it with any craft supplies. Crayons, markers, and stickers are just a few things children can use to personalize their drum. Children can use stickers of safari animals to give the instrument the look of an African drum.
Cover the can or container with construction paper. Allow the child to help tape the paper securely on to the can so that it will not fall off. For a longer-lasting drum, cover the sides with clear contact paper.
Attach a neck strap. Remove the lid of the container and poke two holes in opposite sides of the can near the top. String a long piece of yarn or ribbon through the holes and tie the ends together. Replace the lid and test the length by hanging the drum on the child's neck. She now has a drum she can use while sitting or marching.
Make drumsticks. Let the child paint two 1 1/2-inch diameter plastic foam balls. They can also be decorated with markers. When dry, use two wooden skewers as handles. Poke them into the foam balls and secure them with glue. Wooden dowels are also a good choice for drumsticks.
