How to Teach Signing to Preschoolers

Sign language is a way of communicating silently with your hands. Teaching sign language to a child can help their ability to communicate with other children or adults who have hearing difficulties. It can also improve their vocabulary. Sign language can be fun for preschoolers to learn and can be used in a variety of settings, including signing to music.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce one new word at a time to the children. Say the word, show them a picture of the word and show them the sign for that word.

    • 2

Tell the children to try signing the new vocabulary word. Help them get their hands in the right positions. Have them practice the sign repeatedly.

    • 3

Practice recognition of the different words. Show the picture cards and say the names in different orders, allowing the preschoolers to recall the sign for each word.

    • 4

Find songs, stories or poems that utilize some of the new signing words. Sing or say these verses and incorporate the signs. Preschoolers learn very well in the form of a fun activity, song or game.
