How to Teach Preschoolers to Help

Though it may not seem like it at times (especially during clean up), preschoolers love to help out in the classroom. Helping gives them a sense of ownership of the room, and it also boosts their self-esteem. Problems may sometimes arise when two or more students want to do the same job or when there's a job that no one wants to do. By creating a list of jobs and rotating the students through those jobs, those problems can usually be avoided.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit down with the students at group time and tell them that you are going to make a list of classroom jobs. Ask the students what sorts of jobs they think they can or should do in the classroom and write them down. Some of these jobs may include watering plants, monitoring cubbies to make sure all belongings are put away or setting out snacks. If the students are having trouble thinking of jobs, suggest some to them.

    • 2

Using the list you made with the students, write down each job on the poster board, leaving enough space under each job to put name tags. In the space under the jobs, attach one side of a strip of Velcro.

    • 3

Write each child's name on a name tag and attach the other side of the Velcro that you did not use on the poster board to the backs.

    • 4

Show the students your completed job board. Explain what each job entails and tell them that each week they will be given new jobs to do.

    • 5

Reward the students for doing their jobs by giving them stickers or stamps at the end of each week.
