How to Teach Preschoolers About Hearing

Teaching preschool students about their sense of hearing may be incorporated into many activities throughout the year. Sprinkle these lessons into your curriculum, and, by the end of the year, students will have a good understanding of volume, pitch, tone and how their ears work. Games that use their ears are especially fun for these young students.

Instructions

    • 1

Incorporate music into your lesson plans. Music gives you a chance to study how the ears hear different sounds, tones and volumes. Singing and playing simple instruments is a great way to incorporate hearing into many lessons.

    • 2

Instruct students to spend a few quiet moments in new settings, such as during field trips, listening and paying attention to the sounds they hear. Have them identify the different sounds they hear, and talk about if they are loud or soft, deep or high-pitched, and pleasant or unpleasant to listen to.

    • 3

Collect some noise-making items, such as pennies in a jar, paper to tear, tap shoes, drum sticks and a ball to bounce. Have students put their heads on their desk and listen to each sound, then guess what made the sound. Students can take turns making the sounds.

    • 4

Play a game of whistle hide-and-seek. Give one child a whistle and ask him to hide, then to start blowing the whistle. The other students follow the sound of the whistle to find the hiding child. The first one to find him is the next to hide. This is a good opportunity to talk about how sound travels around objects.
