How to Help Parents to Teach Preschoolers to Share

Learning how to share is more difficult for some than it is for others. Some preschoolers have a natural inclination to share while others are unaware of their own selfishness. Because preschoolers will eventually encounter all kinds of situations that force them to share, they might as well learn how to do it as soon as possible. In order to do this there are some strategies you can use to help parents teach their preschoolers how to share.

Instructions

    • 1

Encourage the parents to reward their preschoolers for sharing. If you show parents that you can make sharing rewarding for the preschoolers, they will have less qualms about sharing. The trick to doing this is to give the kids a common goal that forces them to share and then give them a reward, such as candy or baked treats.

    • 2

Tell parents to praise their preschoolers for sharing. Positive reinforcement teaches kids that it feels good to share. Use plenty of affection through hugs, verbal praise and emotional warmth.

    • 3

Inform the parents that they must lead by example. If their preschooler wants to learn generosity, she must see it to believe it. Some of the ways to do this include sharing your food with your spouse, letting others watch the television channel of their choice and sharing your computer with a loved one.

    • 4

Tell parents that they should make sharing fun for their preschoolers. One way to do this is through cooperative games or activities, such as puzzles. Other activities, such as gardening, can teach kids how to share when the kids must share tools and supplies with you to accomplish a common goal.

    • 5

Encourage parents to be fair when allotting time for their preschoolers to use toys such as tricycles or video games. If there is a toy that their preschooler wants to play with but does not want to share with his friends, they should learn how to make deals with him. He can play with the toy only if he uses it for the allotted amount of time and agrees to share it with his friends after using it.
