How to Help ESL Preschoolers

"ESL," which stands for English as a second language, is an English language study program designed for nonnative speakers. The earlier ESL is introduced, the better. Preschoolers are at the age where they soak up information quickly. There are various ways that you can help ESL preschoolers. The goal is to build and strengthen their English speaking skills so that they can understand and speak English more fluently as they grow older. Helping ESL preschoolers can become easier with a few basic tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach ESL preschoolers vocabulary that deals with family, greetings, animals, zoo, the days of the week, shapes, numbers and the different seasons. Make learning for ESL preschoolers fun by using songs and charts.

    • 2

Help ESL preschoolers with the use of videos, posters, graphs, picture books and educational computer games. Teach them about counting by using pieces of cereal, such as Cheerios, and use M&Ms to introduce colors.

    • 3

Put in a tape or a CD and sing along with the students. To use music effectively when helping ESL preschoolers, introduce the instrumental version first. Play the music softly in the background if you don't have access to the instrumental version.

    • 4

Put the preschoolers in small groups or pairs, making sure to mix the group with some of the advanced students. Introduce an activity in one lesson with one group, then break up the class in smaller groups. Each group should work on the activity, then at the end of the activity, combine all the groups together.
