Share the joy of music. Play the Wiggles' CD and dance with the preschoolers. Play the songs "Big Red Car" and "Do the Bus Stop" to give ideas to reluctant dancers.
Sing songs together. Start with familiar songs like "Old MacDonald" or "Happy Birthday." Listen to "Toddler Favorites" by Music for Little People to get more song ideas.
Act out songs together. Songs with movements are great for preschoolers. Some popular choices include "The Wheels on the Bus," "If You're Happy and You Know It" and "Ring Around the Rosy."
Clap and stamp song rhythms. Encourage preschoolers to clap and stamp along to familiar tunes like the ABC song and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."
Play rhythm instruments. Put on the Sesame Street CD and allow preschoolers to shake tambourines along with the music. Next they can try banging drums along with it. Use tambourines and/or drums while singing songs, too.
Introduce different kinds of music. Play new kinds of music during rest or drawing time. Tell students the style and/or musician you are playing each time. Let students make requests after they've learned about many different kinds of music.
Music for Little People has a diverse collection of music CDs for children, including Cajun, swing, blues, rock, classic, folk and show. You can use borrow them from your local library to introduce your preschoolers to many different kinds of music.
