How to Teach Music to Preschoolers Using Instruments

Introducing music early in a child's life has a dramatic effect. Some research shows a positive relationship between a child's early exposure to music and academic skills, such as math and language learning, later in life, though to what degree is controversial. Using musical instruments with preschoolers need not be solely through formal lessons. Exposing young children to a variety of instruments, especially rhythm instruments, will increase motor skill development as well as instill an appreciation, if not love, of music.

Instructions

Show children a variety of musical instruments. Bring several different ones to class and be prepared to play a few notes on each one. This will expose the children to a variety of instruments and the different sounds of music. For example, if available, bring a trombone, trumpet and flute. Each of these has a distinct sound and pitch range and will engage the children. If possible, let children take turns trying to make a sound on the instrument. After all the instruments have been discussed, ask children to close their eyes or turn around with their backs to you. Play one of the instruments and see if anyone can identify it.

Make instruments in class. Drums can be made by covering formula or coffee cans with decorated paper. Children can beat on the plastic lid with drumsticks or their hands. Make shakers by covering one end of a cardboard tube, filling with beans or rice and covering the other end. Children can then play their homemade instruments while singing with the class. Ask children to listen as you play a rhythm on your drum and then repeat what they hear. Play a CD of children's songs or marching music and have children march in a circle while beating their drums or playing their shakers.

Add a music center to your classroom. Change out the instruments in the center each week to give children exposure to many different types. Place a CD player in the center and encourage children to use the instrument of the week to play along with the music. Giving children freedom in their musical exploration will foster creativity and a love for music.
