Preschool Activities for the Color Blue

Preschool marks the start of many children's educational careers. During this first experience with school, children being learning about a variety of topics -- the alphabet, numbers and shapes, for example. Another major focus area during preschool is color identification and recognition. When teaching about the color blue, employ the use of a variety of hands-on activities.
  1. Painting with Blue

    • Have children use various types of blue paint to create "blue period" paintings. Set different colors of blue finger paint, water colors and tempera paint. Have children use a variety of different types of materials to paint blue pictures; paintbrushes, cotton swabs, toothbrushes, leaves and yarn are just some examples that children can use to paint with, as well as their fingers, of course. Allow them to create any type of painting they'd like, from a portrait to an abstract work of art.

    Blue Sensory Bottles

    • Turn empty water bottles into blue sensory bottles. Clean out and remove the labels from empty water bottles. Have children fill the bottles with several types of blue items, such as glitter, sand and pieces of confetti. After filling the bottles with the blue objects, fill them with water and turn the water blue with a few drops of blue food coloring. Place glue around the inside of the bottle caps and twist them tightly back onto the bottles. Children can shake the bottles and watch as the color blue swirls around inside.

    Blue Collages

    • This is another blue-themed art activity that you can engage children in. Set out different types of paper in a different shades of blue; crepe paper, construction paper, poster board and shimmery paper, for example. In addition to the paper, provide students with other blue items that they can use to create collages, such as pom-poms, ribbons and glitter. Offer children old magazines, as well, which they can search through and cut out images of blue items. Have children use all of the materials and glue them onto a piece of paper to create a blue collage.

    Blue Scavenger Hunt

    • Children search for as many blue items as they can find on a blue scavenger hunt. Provide children with bags and instruct them to search through the classroom for different blue items -- make sure to stress that they only select items that will fit in their bags to avoid having a classroom that is completely turned upside-down. Send children off to hunt for items and after three minutes of searching, ring a bell to indicate the end of the hunt. Have children assemble in a meeting area and share the different blue items they have collected.
