How to Teach Hygiene to Preschoolers

Hygiene is a critical concept that preschoolers must learn. Hygiene skills can be crucial to overall health. These skills also set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy living habits. You can teach hygiene to preschoolers through a variety of methods. Instructions

    • 1

Discuss hygiene. Talk about what it is and why it is important. Allow the students to share personal stories and opinions about hygiene, such as accounts of visiting the dentist, taking a bath and brushing their hair.

    • 2

Demonstrate the proper way to wash your hands. Teach kids to hum the "Happy Birthday" song a few times so that they know that have soaped up and scrubbed for a proper amount of time. Talk about when washing hands is important, such as before meals.

    • 3

Distribute toothbrushes to your students. Demonstrate how to brush your teeth and invite them to imitate you. Finally, squirt a pea-sized amount of toothpaste onto each child's toothbrush and let them actually brush, spit and rinse. Talk about the importance of visiting the dentist and how to overcome fear related to dental visits.

    • 4

Hand out washcloths to each child. Talk about how you should bathe. Allow them to mimic washing the parts of their bodies that are not covered by clothes. Remind them to wash their whole bodies at home.

    • 5

Invite students to draw a picture of what they must do to get ready for school each morning. Talk about hygiene concepts that you haven't studied yet, such as putting on clean clothes, rinsing your face and brushing your hair.

    • 6

Read books that deal with hygiene and discuss the concepts in the books.
