How to Teach Preschoolers to Take Care of Themselves

Preschool children come to class with many different levels of personal care skills, depending on their family life and what their parents have taught them. They are at an age where they are capable of learning how to care for themselves so it is important to teach them as many life skill lessons as you can during your time with them. Teaching them to care for themselves also prepares preschoolers for entering an actual school atmosphere.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach various body care functions. Speak about keeping hair combed and wearing clean clothes. Talk about washing and keeping generally neat and tidy. Introduce the ideas with songs and stories and bring them up repeatedly.

    • 2

Teach the children how to make an easy and safe snack when they are hungry. Give them some examples such as getting an apple from the bowl or drinking water from a cup. Remind them about being responsible and going to bed on time as well as doing what parents ask them to do.

    • 3

Explain about stranger danger, speak about having a fire plan, and prepare lessons about safety hazards. Teach the children that part of taking care of themselves means looking out for specific dangers and keeping away from them.

    • 4

Teach children how to find an adult they can trust, such as a parent or guardian and which adults they can trust if they can't find one, such as police officers or teachers. Explain that part of taking care of themselves is knowing where to go if they need help and being able to ask for help from a safe adult.
